Cafe Baudelaire

Clearly, I haven't been painting lately. I was cruising Etsy this morning, looking for a little inspiration, and ran across this beauty:

During our trip to California last week, we visited wine country. Sonoma to be specific....

We did what you do when you go to wine country (cheesy pictures, I know)...

One of the places we visited was Imagery Estate Winery. We were busy "aerating" and taking deep sniffs of our wine when I looked around & noticed all the art. There were mini-galleries throughout the tasting room... what a pleasant surprise. Come to find out, they change their labels periodically using various artists' work. They are always accepting portfolios for review.... mine is in the mail! I think the selected artists win a small monetary award and several bottles of wine. Here are a few in the gallery:

My personal favorite:

Hope you have a great weekend... cheers!

West coast here we come...

We're heading to Cali today & couldn't be more excited. The Golden Gate Bridge has inspired many a artist... the paintings that have been done of this iconic landmark are endless. Perhaps I'll whip one up when we get home! See you in a week....

Inspired by the Classics....

Who doesn't love "Where the Wild things Are" by the brilliant Maurice Sendak? The book was originally published in 1963 and is still a key source of inspiration for illustrators all over.

I got tickeled when I ran across this painting today….

It reminded me of myself as a kid.  If the glasses were 2x as big & red.  It is from the blog 'Daily Paintings by Gretchen Kelly'.  There are several artists that have "daily paintings" blogs, but upon closer examination, I realized this blog was mainly all nude paintings.  It took me back to my drawing 101 class.  I was, and am, way too immature to sit through figure drawing with a straight face.  You go into the classroom, which has a warehouse feel, sit on an awkward saddle-like chair, and face a lit stage.  We would draw on these large newspaper pads with charcol... the feeling of charcoal in my hand still makes me cringe today.  There's just something about it.  Anyhow, you're sitting there getting your stuff organized when the model walks in, strips down, and hops on stage.  The drawing segments are timed.  The models move every few minutes, so you have to roughly sketch in a hurry.  Thankfully, I never had any friends in these classes that I was close enough with to laugh out loud.  I still, 10 years later, run into one of the female models... she has no idea who I am, but I've seen her naked.

Back to Gretchen Kelly.... I just love the depth of color in her watercolors.  She also has another blog, another LOOK, that is all landscapes.

Monday Mully Grubs

I have a hard time getting motivated & focused on Mondays.  Looking at some of my favorite blogs (Urban Grace Interiors, Laura Casey Interiors,  Inside the Loop, Carol Marine) & checking out other artist on Etsy really helps.  Today I had to look no further than my sister-in-law, Carly.  Petey Pie's has really taken etsy by storm & is making adorable things.

And an excellent little tidbit that Mot found:

He who works with his hands is a laborer.

He who works with his hands and his head is a craftsman.

He who works with his hands and his head and his heart is an artist.

Eye Candy

If I were to choose one current day artist to idolize, it might just be Charles Van Sandwyk.  The detail and depth of color in his illustrations demand  your imagination to run wild.  His beautiful penmanship and ornately embellished borders make even his notecards worthy of home decor.

Under Pressure...

The title is meant to be sung ('Under Pressure'.... you know, David Bowie). Meaning, I'm not stressed... just really busy. I'm enjoying what I'm doing. I've never really thought of myself as one to work well under pressure, but I guess I am where festival prep is concerned. I'm a one man assembly line. Every possible surface in my house is covered. Music is loud, coffee is strong, and the phone is being ignored.

Though busy, I'm still taking breaks to count my blessing & enjoy the beautiful taste of spring in my yard......

And admire the works of the talented artist that inspire & motivate me. I'd like to spend a day with Patience Brewster (another artist Mot introduced me to). This illustration says it all (and is probably how I'll feel by Monday):

Busy Bee

Wendy & I cordially invite you to join us at the Forsythia Festival in Forsyth, GA this coming weekend! We're excited to be participating in our very first festival together. This week we are busy producing our last pieces, organizing inventory, and figuring out the business end of things.

Speaking of bees... my mom bought me the most wonderful book for my birthday by Mary Woodin. 'The Painted Garden' is an artist's documentation of a year in her English garden. Her illustrations are truly inspiring. I'm particularly taken with her watercolor bees. I haven't been able to find any pictures of them online, so you'll just have to buy the book!
